Perennial. Stems 50-150 cm, erect, loosely tufted. Leaf sheaths auriculate, at least lower with long, stiff retrorse hairs; ligule 4-6 mm; blades 10-60 em x 6-10 mm, flat, drooping, glabrous or with sparse, rough hairs. Panicle 15-40 x 10-25 cm, very lax, drooping, branches very long, rough, mostly in pairs, spreading or drooping, bearing 1-9 spikelets, lowest pair with a ciliate scale at base. Spikelets 20-40 x 3-6 mm, line ar-oblong, pendent, green or purplish, shortly hairy, 4-12-flowered. Lower glume 5-8 mm, subulate, upper glume 8-11 mm, lanceolate, rarely with a very short awn. Lemma 10-14 mm, lanceolate, shortly hairy at least on lower half; awn 4-7 mm, straight. Palea distinctly shorter than lemma. Anthers 2.5-3.5 mm. Fl. 6-10. Woodland, usually on shaded slopes, 1200-2135 m.
