Annual. Stems 2-35 cm, geniculately ascending from base, smooth, glabrous. Leaf sheaths glabrous. Leaf blades linear, 0.5-3 mm broad, acuminate, green or glaucous, pubescent on adaxial surface. Inflorescence cylindrical, 0.5-7.5 cm x 3-6 mm. Spikelets 1.3-2.5 mm, green to purplish. Glumes lanceolate, acute or ± obtuse, ciliate-serrulate on keel; lower 1.5-2.2 mm, upper 1.8-2.2 mm. Lemma unawned, 2-2.5 mm. Palea 1-1.5 mm, obtuse, 2-veined. Stamens 3, anthers 0.6-1 mm. Caryopsis ellipsoid, 1-1.2 mm. Fl. 7-9. Marshy ground, nr streams, wet sandy places, 900-1500 m.

N. Africa, S. & C. Europe to W. Siberia, Cyprus, W. Syria, Caucasia, Iraq, Iran to C. Asia. Introduced in N. America.
