Annual. Stems 10-40 cm, geniculate-ascending, rooting at nodes, smooth, glabrous. Leaf blades linear-lanceolate, 9-12 x 0.5-0.8 cm, sparsely pilose on both surfaces, margins scabridulous, long-ciliate near base, acuminate. Spikes 4-6, 2-3 cm, green suffused pale or greyish-purple; peduncles 1.5 mm, hairy; axis c. triangular in cross-section, glabrous, acuminate. Spikelets 4-5 mm, usually 3-flowered. Glumes scabridulous on keel, upper ovate, 2-2.5 mm, excluding 2 mm awn. Lowest lemma 2.5 mm with 1 mm awn; palea ciliolate at margins. Anthers c. 0.7 mm, yellow. Caryopsis angular-globose, 1 mm, reddish-brown. Fl. 9. Field margins and banks of irrigation canals.
Tropics and subtropics of Old World, naturalised in Italy, Sicily, Crete and Cyprus. Introduced into America.
