Caespitose perennial with woody rhizome. Stems to 1 m, erect or geniculate, glabrous except for purplish, white-bearded nodes. Inflorescence digitate, of 2-6 spike-like racemes. Spikelets numerous, green or purplish, overlapping, with whitish hairs on callus. Glumes 2.5-4.5 mm. Awn of sessile spikelets 7-20 mm. Fl. 5-7. Calcareous rocks, phrygana, among Pinus halepensis, 100-800 m.
