Annual. Stems tufted, erect or geniculate-ascending, 9-50 cm, flattened; sheaths glabrous. Leaves linear, flat or drying folded, 3-3.5 mm broad, adaxial surface sparsely pilose. Spikes 2-5 , straight, slender, 1.5-10 cm x 3-4 mm, axis glabrous. Glumes glabrous, lower 2-2.7 mm, upper 4-5.5 mm. Lemma lanceolate, 2.5-4 mm, glabrous, acute. Palea 2-keeled, 2.5 mm. Anthers small, 0.5 mm, yellow. Caryopsis oblong-ovoid, obtusely trigonous in cross-section, 1.5 mm, greyish-black. Fl. 8-10. Edge of street pavements, football pitch, c. 80 m.
Tropical and subtropical regions, naturalised in S. Europe.
