Stems to 15 cm, Leaf blades 2-3 mm broad, scabrid or sparsely pilose on upper surface. Spike 2.5-5 cm, oblong, usually partly enclosed in uppermost sheath. Spikelets 15-17 mm, densely villous, with 3-5 florets;rachilla tough. Glumes 7-9 mm, linear-lanceolate, gradually tapering into short awn 4-7 mm. Lemma as long as glumes, with prominent keel and short awn 4-7 mrn. Keels of palea prolonged into 2 short awns , with deep cleft between them. Fl. 5-8. Sandy gravel plains, steppe, shaley or igneous slopes in steppe, 850-2500 m.
