Plant forming small tufts. Stems 45-150 cm. Leaf sheaths thin, open to base, finally decaying into fibres; ligule to 2.5 mm, with clasping auricles; blades flat; 6-18 mm broad, glossy beneath, with scabrid margins. Panicle 10-50 cm, nodding, very lax, branches scabrid. Spikelets 8-20 mm, with 3-10 florets. Glumes subequal, with scarious margins, upper 5-8 mm. Lemma ovate-lanceolate, 6-9 x 1.8-2 mm, 5-veined. Awn 10-18 mm, often flexuous. Anthers less than 1/2 length of palea. Ovary glabrous. 2n = 42. Fl. 7. Woods, scrub, screes, wet places, banks, s.l.-2360 m.
Most of Europe but rare in Mediterranean area ; Siberia, Tien Shan, N.W. Himalaya. Euro-Sib. element.
