Laxly caespitose perennial. Stems 30-120 cm, stout. Leaf sheaths open to base, old ones brown, decaying into fibres; ligule a short rim, with glabrous clasping auricles. Leaf blades rather flaccid, flat, ± smooth above; sclerenchyma strands all or mostly atupper surface, if lower ones present then reaching veins from beneath. Panicle 10-20 cm, with aculeolate branches, lowest node with 2 branches, longer with 4-6 spikelets, shorter with 1-3 spikelets. Spikelets 11-12 mm, with 2-5 florets. Glumes obtuse, broadly scarious-margined toward apex; upper 3.2-7 x 2.4 mm. Lemma 6.5-7 x 2.5-3 mm. Ovary glabrous. 2n = 14. Fl. 7-8. Meadows, wet places in mountain woods, 400-2465 m.
