Laxly caespitose, stoloniferous perennial. Stems 30-40 cm. Leaf sheaths closed to mouth glabrous, scarcely decaying into fibres; ligule very short. Leaf blades plicate, rarely flat when fresh, 0.6-0.8 mm broad when dry, glaucous, sometimes slightly keeled, sparsely long-hairy above, smooth or weakly scabrid near apex; veins 5, ribs 3-5, very prominent, sometimes with single sclerenchyma cells; sclerenchyma strands not stout, subequal, epidermis cells of keeled part diminishing near midrib and near adjacent angles. Panicle oblong-ovate, 6-7.5 cm, erect, only slightly lax; branches slender, scabrid. Spikelets glaucous, tinged violet, lanceolate, 6.4-8.2 mm, with 3-5 florets. Upper glume lanceolate, 3-3.9 x 1.3-1.4 mm, rather shortly acuminate. Lemma lanceolate, 4.3-5 x 1.7-2 mm, rather long-acuminate. Awn 2-2.7 mm. Fl. 6-7. Damp shady places, meadows with Nardus stricta, 650-2000 m.
