Perennial with creeping rhizome. Stems ro bust, to 2 m x 1 cm. Leaf sheaths scabridulous; ligules c. 4 mm, Leaf blades 0.8-1.5 cm broad, light green, scabridulous on abaxial surface. Panicle ± dense, 10-40 cm, branches scabrid, becoming patent. Spikelets ovate, to 8 mm, green, turning purple or yellowish- purple. Glumes subacute, lower 2-3 mm, upper 3-4 mm. Lemmas 7-veined, 3-4 mm, obtuse, scabridulous, Palea c. equalling lemma, obtuse, keels unwinged. Anthers linear, 1-1.8 mm. [2n = 60J. In ditches, often growing with Phragmites, nr s.l.-900 m.
Europe except in extreme north.
