Stems erect or curved-ascending, 10-27 cm, smooth, glabrous, green or ± glaucous; nodes blackish-brown. Leaves linear-lanceolate, 6-10 cm x 15-25 mm, glabrous, margins scabridulous towards apex, green, acuminate; sheaths glabrous, that enclosing spike retrorsely scabridulous, Ligule c. 0.5 mm, truncate- denticulate. Spikes 10-35, to 12 cm, with up to 20 spikelets, glabrous. Glumes without keel, lanceolate, 5.5-7 x 1.6 mm, thick, coriaceous, glabrous, green, acuminate; margins incurved, yellow-hyaline. Lemma narrowly deltoid-lanceolate, 5 x 1.4 mm, minutely pubescent in apical half, acuminate. Palea c. 4.5 mm. Lodicules 2, thick, fleshy, obliquely ovate, glabrous. Anthers 3 mm. Caryopsis ovoid, apex appendiculate; embryo small, c. 1/5 x caryopsis. Fl. 5. Ditch sides and other damp places.
Mediterranean area, Cyprus, Crimea, N. Iraq, W. Syria. Introduced in N. & S. America, S. Africa and Australia.
