Annual. Stems 30-70 cm, fasciculate. Leaves flat, 6-8 mm broad, usually scabrid. Spike 4-7 x 0.6-0.8 cm, oblong-linear, distichous, with rachis densely white-ciliate at margins, very fragile at maturity. Glumes similar, 4-6 mm, linear-lanceolate, silky-pubescent, gradually tapering into an awn 1-1.5 cm. Lemma of central spikelet 1.1-1.3 cm, ovate-lanceolate, glabrous on back, scabrid towards apex, with awn 7-15 cm. Lemma of lateral spikelets slightly smaller, usually obtuse at apex, unawned, rarely mucronate. 2n = 14. Fl. fro 5-6. Quercus forests, scrub, rocky limestone slopes, marly banks, waste places and cultivated land, 30-1650 m.
