Stems erect or geniculate at base, 20-110 cm, with glabrous nodes. Leaf sheaths auriculate. Leaves with ± inrolled margins, 14-45 cm x 1.3-5 mm, ± glaucous, ending in a sharp tip. Panicle erect, very dense, 8-15 x 1-2.5 cm, oblong-cylindrical; lowest branches 1.5-4.5 mm. Spikelets, except for anthers and dark plumose styles, ± obscured by very long silky callus hairs; glumes all subequal, 3-5.5 mm, unawned, greenish. Pedicel of long-pedicellate spikelets 1-2.5 mm. Fl. 4-7. Sandy places by sea, marshes, ditches, fallow fields, vineyards, roadsides, s.l.-760 m.
