Stems 50-100 cm, robust, nearly always glabrous below spikes. Leaf blades to 8 mm broad, rigid, scabrid on veins of upper surface, glabrous beneath. Spike 15-20 cm, rather lax. Spikelets with 3-4 florets. Glumes 19-23 mm, nearly as long as spikelets, coriaceous, with a distinct midrib and 1-2 ±obscure lateral veins on each side, with short awn 2-3.5 mm. Lemma c. 15 mm, oblong-lanceolate, 3-5-veined, with short mucro or unawned. Fl. 6-9. Maritime sands, s.l.-30 m.
Coasts of N.E. Balkans, S. Russia, Crimea, Caucasia, and the island of Mangyshlak in C. Asia.
