Annual. Stems erect, decumbent or subprostrate, 9-80 cm, usually with 2-4 nodes. Ligule rounded to truncate, 0.5-2.5 mm. Auricles present or absent, to 3.5 mm. Leaf blades 3-11 cm x 0.5-7 mm, glabrous, smooth. Spikes straight or curved, 3.5-25 cm. Rachis slender to rather stout, cylindrical to ± angular, glabrous to scabrid, 1-2.5 mm thick at nodes. Spikelets 7-19 mm, with 4-8 fertile and 0-1 rudimentary florets. Upper glume lanceolate to oblong, rounded on back, 5-12 mm, obtuse to rounded or acute, not turgid. Lemmas 4-8 mm, ± lanceolate, 3-5-veined; awns absent. Mature caryopses 2.7-5.5 x 0.5-1.5 mm.
