Annual. Stems 40-110 cm, erect, decumbent or subprostrate, with 3-5 nodes. Ligule truncate to obtuse, 0.5-2.7 mm. Auricles present or absent. Leaf blades 10-30 x 2-10 mm, acuminate, convolute in young shoots. Spike straight, 10-18 cm. Rachis rigid, scabridulous or glabrous, 1.5-2 mm thick at nodes. Spikelets 11-18 x 3-6 mm , with 3-8 fertile and 0-1 rudimentary florets. Upper glume 12-25 mm, lanceolate, 0.75-1.5 x spikelet. Lemma of lower florets 6-8.5 mm , elliptic to ovate, very turgid when mature, usually with a scabrid awn 10-23 mm, rarely awnless or with a short, sometimes flaccid awn. Mature caryopses 4.2-7 x 1.6-3 mm, 2-3 x as long as broad. Fl. 5-7. Corn and fallow fields, roadsides, beaches, s.l.-1300 m.
