Glabrous perennial. Stems to 1 m; basal internode 2-6 cm. Ligule hairs 0.5 mm. Leaf sheaths with a few long hairs on upper margin. Leaf blades 2-6 mm broad, flat or convolute. Panicle normally contracted, but lax and effuse in var. arundinacea Griseb., to 30 cm, with short orlong, erect or erecto-patent branches in fascicles of 2-6. Spikelets 4-6 mm, 2-5-flowered, uppermost reduced, each floret breaking up beneath lemma. Glumes unequal; lower 1.5-2.5 mm, upper 2-3 mm. Lowest lemma 2.5-4.5 mm. Anthers purple, 2-2.5 mm. Caryopsis 2.5-3 mm. Fl. 8-10. Forests, wet places, nr s.l.-1600 m.
