Perennial with slender creeping stems, rooting and branching freely from nodes; flowering branches erect. Leaf sheaths hairy; ligule membranous, short; blades broadly elliptic-lanceolate, to 5 x 1.5 cm, Inflorescence densely hairy. Racemes mostly reduced to small clusters of 3-4 mm spikelets. Glumes glabrous or hairy; awn of lower glume c. 1 cm, longer than that of upper, purple, viscid in fruiting state. Fl. 7-10. Shady places in wet woods, 100-600 m.
