Tufted perennial with short rhizomes and stems to 1 m or more. Sheaths of lower leaves glabrous or pilose. Leaf blades 10-25 cm x 3-12 mm. Infloresence usually with 3-5 spreading racemes, 6-8 cm. Spikelets ovate-pointed, 3-3.5 mm, silky-fringed; lower glume absent, upper glume and lower lemma as long as spikelet, 5-9-veined, with glabrous back and silky hairs on margins. Fl. 8-10. Ditches, c. 140 m.
Native of S. America from Brazil to Argentina; introduced in S. Europe, Egypt, Sinai, Caucasus, N. Iran, Transcaspia, Pakistan.
