Perennial with far-creeping rhizome and stolons. Stems erect or decumbent, to 40 cm. Leaves hairy at sheath nodes and usually near ligule; blades 3-8 mm broad. Inflorescence of 2 paired false racemes, 2-7 cm, often deflexed at maturity. Spikelets oblong or elliptic-oblong, acute, 2.5-3.5 mm; lower glume a small scale, ± triangular, upper glume and lower lemma as long as spikelet, 3-5-veined, minutely adpressed-hairy. Fl. 6-10. Ditches and irrigation channels, sea shores, s.l.-450 m.
Native to Old & New World tropics; naturalised in S. Europe, Cyprus, Egypt, Sinai, Pakistan.
