Erect perennial with stout rhizomes. Stems to 100 cm, simple or branched below, glabrous. Leaf sheaths glabrous or hairy on margins; blades 5-35 x up to 3.5 cm, scabrid beneath and loosely hairy near base. Panicle dense with hairy axis. Spikelets in groups of 1-6. Involucre with two kinds of bristles; outer ones scabrid, unequal, inner with tuberculate-based cilia, curved in lower half, to 40 mm. Lemma of fertile floret acute or mucronate. Fl. 5-7. Dry rocky slopes, eroded shale, sunny hillsides, s.l.-2135 m.
