Annual. Stems 7-30 cm, creeping or erect, smooth. Ligule 1-2 mm. Leaf blades 0.8-3.5 mm broad, held ± erect. Panicle lax, 3.5-10 cm, pyramidal; lowest branches single or in pairs, patent or deflexed after flowering. Spikelets 4.5-5.5 mm, closely spaced with 3-5 per branch. Glumes unequal. Lemma sparsely hairy on keel and marginal veins, lacking basal wool. Palea with crispate hairs along entire length of keels. Anthers 0.6-0.9 mm, twice as long as broad. Fl. 3-8. Sandy, grassy and waste places, often in irrigated areas, s.l.-2200 m.
Cosmopolitan, of Mediterranean origin.
