Perennial, laxly caespitose, shortly stoloniferous with numerous extravaginal shoots arising from base of stem. Stems 25-90 cm, terete. Lower leaf sheaths ± purplish, scabrid. Ligule 3-8 mm, acute. Leaf blades 2-3.5 mm broad, flat. Panicle ovoid to broadly pyramidal, 7-13 cm, branches very scabrid, lowest in whorls of 3-5, ± erect after flowering. Spikelets 2.5-3.5 mm, in dense groups of 6-18 along panicle branches. Glumes subequal, lower broader than upper. Lemma hairy on keel, lanate at base. Palea keels scabrid. Anthers 1.5-2 mm. Fl. 5-8. Woods, meadows, damp places, coastal grassland, alpine grassy steppe, gardens, s.l.-2210 m.
