Stoloniferous perennial. Stems 10-90 cm, loosely tufted, smooth, glabrous, decumbent at base, rooting from lower nodes. Leaf sheaths glabrous; ligule to 5 mm, obtuse to truncate; blades 2-13 cm x 1-6 mm, linear, acuminate. Panicle 2-10 x 1.2-2 mm, ovate-oblong or pyramidal, lobed, pale green or purplish; branches semiverticillate. Spikelets 1.5-1.9 mm, oblong. Glumes elliptic, obtuse, unawned, scabrid on back. Lemma c. 1 mm, denticulate, unawned. Palea as long as lemma. Anthers 0.5-0.7 mm, Caryopsis 0.7-0.8 mm. Fl. 4-8. Damp water meadows, 50-1300 m,
