Stems to 40 cm, erect, loosely flexuous. Leaf sheaths smooth. Ligules truncate or jagged, to 1 mm. Spike 3-25 cm, very slender and flexuous, glabrous to pubescent. Pedicels absent. Spikelets 4-7 mm , remote, very slender. Lower glume usually present in terminal floret, to 0.5 mm, veinless or obscurely 1-veined, less than 1/2 x upper; upper glume 0.5-1.3 mm, 1-veined. Lemma of lower floret 3.5-5 mm, with awn ± as long, ±glabrous to puberulent; lemma of upper floret variously reduced, but rachilla produced beyond lower floret even if upper floret absent. Anther 0.3-0.9 mm, probably not exserted at anthesis. Caryopsis 3-4.5 mm. Fl. 4-6. Quercus scrub, stony slopes, fallow fields, waste places, s.l.-1200 m.
Mediterranean area, Balkans, Crimea, Transcaucasia, S.W. Asia eastwards to Pakistan.
