Erect tufted perennial to 40 cm. Stems striate, glabrous. Leaf sheaths pubescent. Ligule 1-1.5 mm, membranous-ciliate. Leaf blades 12-20 em x 3-5 mm, pale green to glaucescent, acute to acuminate, glabrous on both surfaces, margins and sometimes veins scabridulous. Inflorescence oblong or elongate-cylindrical, 3-8.5 x 0.5-0.8 cm, pale yellow, rarely bluish-purple. Spikelets 2-3-flowered, shortly pedicellate. Glumes lanceolate, 6-9 x 1-1.5 mm, glabrous except for slightly ciliolulate keel, acuminate; awn to 2 mm, glabrous or sparsely scabridulous. Lemma 3-5-fid, 5.5-6 x 2 mm, glabrous; longest awn to 1.7 mm. Palea lanceoIate, 3-5 mm, awns to 0.5 mm, glabrous. Anthers linear, 3-4 mm, yellow. Ovary pubescent, 2 mm. Style to 4 mm. Fl. 5-8. Stony slopes and screes above tree-line, on limestone or serpentine, at edge ofor in open Pinus brutia, P. nigra, P. sylvestris, Cedrus libani, Abies, Juniperus or Carpinus-Fagus forest, 50-3125 m.
