Annual. Stems erect or geniculate, rarely ±prostrate, 2-100 cm. Leaf blades linear, usually 20-30 cm x 4-10 mm, loosely hairy at base. Inflorescence an erect spike-like panicle. Spikelets turgid, subsessile, solitary, surrounded by 5-10 fulvous to rufous, antrorsely scabrid bristles; exposed lemma of fertile floret strongly transversely rugose. Fl. 7-10. Waste places, fields and gardens, s.l.-1000 m.
