Annual. Stems 10-50 cm. Leaf sheaths hairy on margins; blades linear-lanceolate, glabrous. Inflorescence cylindrical, tapering upwards, erect or slightly nodding. Spikelets 1.8-3 mm, in groups of 1-many, pedicellate, each spikelet with 1-3 antrorsely scabrid green or purple bristles below. Upper glume equalling spikelet; lemma of fertile floret transversely rugose. Fl. 7-9. Disturbed ground, gardens, s.l.-2300 m.
Temperate and subtropical regions of the Old World; introduced elsewhere, absent from most of S.W. Asia.
