Coarse caespitose perennial. Stems rather slender, 30-130 cm, glabrous. Leaf blades 10-30 cm x 1-4mm, scabrid, otherwise glabrous or lower ones with scattered setae near base and along sheaths. Inflorescence lax, 5-10 cm, of 2-4 fascicles of racemes. Spatheole of racemes 16-30 mm, lower part lanceolate, compressed, navicular, tapering to long-acuminate apex, greenish or reddish. Involucral spikelets 7-12 mm, green or reddish-brown, with tuberculate setae 3-4 mm on upper 1/2-2/3 of outer glumes. Pedicellate spikelets 6-9 mm, awnless. Sessile spikelets 1 per raceme unit, terete, 5.5-6 mm, with acute hairy callus 3.5-4 mm and a perfect awn 5-6.5 mm. Callus hairs pale buff to deep yellowish-brown, 3.5-4 mm. Glumes of sessile spikelet pale whitish-green or dark brown. Fl. 5-8. Streamsides, damp banks, wheatfields, scrub grassland, limestone masonry, s.l.-915 m.
Throughout the Old World tropics and subtropics, reaching its N.limit in Anatolia; the 'Root-grass' of S. Africa.
