Caespitose perennial to 2 m. Leaf blades flat, linear, to 55 cm x 4.5-12 mm, with a conspicuous, rather excentric pale midrib 0.5-2 mm broad beneath; margins and surfaces scabrid. Panicle narrow, 10-20 x 1-1.5 cm; racemes 2.5-6 cm. Sessile and pedicellate spikelets similar, 4.5-5.5 mm; pedicel of pedicellate spikelets 1-2 mm. Glumes subequal, greenish to purplish, rosy red near top, with ± hyaline apex; lower glume cartilaginous, glabrous except for hirsute margin, obtuse to subacute. Awn of upper lemma 2-6 mm. Callus hairs 3.5-5.5 mm, subequal to spikelet, silky, greyish-white. Fl. 7-8. Pinus nigra forest, damp slopes, banks of hill streams, nr s.I.-1000 m.
