Stems 6-50 cm, usually erect. Leaf sheaths smooth. Ligules truncate or jagged, to 1 mm. Inflorescence a sparingly branched, usually erect panicle or rarely a raceme, 1-11 cm, usually well exserted from uppermost sheath; pedicels 0.5-3.5 mm. Spikelets 6.5-11.5 mm; most florets hermaphrodite; distal 0-2 florets gradually reduced, male or sterile. Upper glume 4.5-9 mm : lower glume 2.5-5 mm, 1/2-3/4 x upper. Lemma 4.5-8 mm , usually 1.3-1.9 mm broad, finely 5-veined, glabrous to scabrid or rarely pubescent; awn usually c. as long as lemma; callus c. 0.2 mm, rounded, glabrous. Stamens 1; anthers 0.5-0.7 mm, usually included at anthesis. Ovary glabrous. Fl. 4-6. Fields, roadsides, rough ground.
