Stems 8-65 cm, usually erect. Leaf sheaths smooth. Ligules jagged or truncate, to 1 mm. Inflorescence a sparingly branched panicle or a raceme, 5-35 cm, erect or slightly nodding, usually partly included in uppermost sheath; pedicels 0.4-2 mm. Spikelets 6-10.5 mm ; most florets hermaphrodite; distal 0-2 florets gradually reduced, male or sterile. Upper glume 2.5-6.5 mm ; lower glume 0.4-2.5 mm, 1/10-2/5 x upper. Lemma 4.5-7.5 mm , usually 0.8-1.3 mm broad, finely 5-veined, glabrous to scabrid or sometimes ciliate on margins; awn usually 1-2 x lemma; callus c. 0.2 mm, rounded, glabrous. Stamens 1; anthers 0.4-0.8 mm, usually included at anthesis. Ovary glabrous. Fl. 4-6. Quercus scrub, sand dunes, weed of fallow and cultivated fields, 20-1400 m.
Mediterranean area, W.& C.Europe, S. Russia, Caucasia, S.W.Asia eastwards to Pakistan.
