Ssp patulum : Glabrous annual herbs, erect or ascending, 20-60 cm. Stems slender, with whitish striae, 3 mm thick at most. Leaves elliptic, narrowly elliptic or linear oblong, 12-45 x 2-12 mm, caducous. Bracts much smaller than the leaves. İnflorescence lax, terminal, with 1-2 flowers at each node. Flowers 3-4 cm, the perianth persisting and enclosing the nuts, trigonous-ovoid. Nuts usually glossy and punctate. Fl. 5-8. Cultivated and disturbed ground, open or damp places, 500-1800m.
Europe except N. & W. Siberia, S.W. Asia, N. Africa.
Ssp pulchellum : Erect or ascending annual herbs, 20-50 cm. Stems slender, less than 2.5 mm thick, usually with whitish striae. Leaves linear-oblong or narrowly elliptic, 10-45 x 3-8 mm, much longer than the bracts. Flowers in lax terminal inflorescences, c. 2 mm, the perianth segments not closing around apex of fruit. Nuts glossy or dull, just exserted at maturity. Fl. 6-10. Cultivated land, open or damp places, s.l.-1600 m.
