Perennial up to 150 cm. Basal leaves narrowly lanceolate to oblanceolate, more than 3 x longer than broad, acute. Petioles canaliculate above. Inflorescence dense. Pedicels longer than the fruiting perianth segments, articulate below the middle. Fruiting perianth segments cordate to triangular, at least one tuberculate, 4-5 x 3-4 mm. Fl. 5-8. Banks, marshes, waste places, s.I.-2300 m.
Naturalised in most parts of the world.
