Glabrescent annual, usually villose below, 10-40 cm, sparingly and strictly branched. Leaf laciniae linear. Flowers 13-24 mm across. Sepals pallid, glabrous or villose outside. Petals oblong-oblanceolate, flame-scarlet, often with a black base. Achenes lax, c.3 mm, rugose-reticulate, dorsal margin with an obtuse projection adpressed to the style and shorter than it, transverse crest usually weakly toothed; beak slender, short, curved upwards, indigo-tipped. Fl. 4-6. Fields, steppe, rocky places, s.l.-1900 m.
