Hirsute perennial, 10-25 cm. Stock slightly swollen, some of the roots fleshy, fusiform-cylindrical, at least 5 cm long. Stems branched. Radical leaves trisect with a stalked terminal segment; segments 2-3-lobed, crenate-dentate. Peduncles sulcate; sepals strongly reflexed. Petals 7-12 cm. Torus hairy. Achenes suborbicular, compressed, with a narrow groove on either side of keel; beak triangular-uncinate, 0,5 mm. Fl. 5-6. Euro.-Siberian region; evidently a rare plant in S.W. Asia.

Distinguished from subsp. aleae Rouy & Fouc. by having a conspicuously swollen, corm-like stock, subglobose receptacle, and pedicels strongly sulcate throughout . Fl. 5. Roadside. nr s.l. Widespread in most of Europe but absent from much of S. Euro-Sib. element.
