Shrub or small tree, 3-8 m; spines sparse, up to 1 cm. Leaves obovate to broadly ovate, ± glabrous above, dark green, ± pubescent and lighter beneath; on fertile shoots 2-6 x 1.5-5 cm, lobes 3-7, irregularly serrate near the apex, up to ½ -incised; on sterile shoots leaves larger and more deeply lobed; petioles 1-3 cm. Corymbs compound, many-flowered. Flowers 12-17 mm diam., pedicels and hypanthium pilose or tomentose; sepals 1-1.5 mm, broadly triangular; styles 3-5. Fruit black or blackish-purple, globose-ellipsoid, c. 10 mm long; pyrenes 3-5. FI. 5-6. Woodland, s.l.-1700 m.
