Shrub or small tree up to 6 m; shoots pubescent, even at maturity. Leaves lanceolate-oblong to obovate, up to 25 x 7 cm, dentate with the lateral veins ending in the teeth, glabrous above, reddish-brown-tomentose beneath. Panicles up to 17 cm long, broadly pyramidal. Flowers white, 1,5-2 cm diam., fragrant, sessile; calyx tomentose. Fruit pyriform or ellipsoidal, 2-3 cm long , yellow; seeds 1-1,5 cm, ovoid. Fl. 10-1. Cultivated.
Native in China and Japan but widely planted in S. Europe, N. America and Asia.
