Low shrub, 0,3-1,5 m, stems erect, spreading by underground suckers. Prickles straight, slender, subulate, up to 0,8 cm long, but often small and bristle-like, base slightly dilated, sparse or on young stems often absent, ± uniform. Leaves soon deciduous, leaflets 7, oblong to ovate or broadly oval to suborbicular, 2-7 x 1,2-3,5 cm, usually obtuse with rounded or unequal base, pubescent to tomentose on both surfaces, greyish- or bluish-green, usually glandular beneath; scentless or smelling of resin or fruit; distinctly glandular-biserrate; rachis glandular and hairy; stipules broad with falcate, somewhat convergent auricles. Flowers solitary or a few together, with broad bracts. Pedicels usually short, 0,5-1,5 cm, glandular-hispid or stipulate, rarely smooth. Sepals narrowly ovate with a long, narrow tip, up to 2,5 cm long, outer sepals pinnatifid with a few, ± linear lobes or sometimes all entire, glandular on the back, ascending or erect after anthesis, persistent. Petals 2-3 cm long, truncate, deep pink or sometimes white. Styles lanate to villous, stigma-head compact, semiglobose, disc rather broad, flat to concave, orifice wide. Hypanthia globose to pyriform, 1-2,5 cm, ripening early, soft, dull to pure red, glandular-hispid or occasionally smooth. Fl. 6-7. Rocky, open slopes, scrub, subalpine meadows, 1300-2500 m.
