Stems 5-30 cm, simple or stiffly branched, often from near base, quadrangular, scabrid-puberulent below, glabrous in upper parts. Leaves 7-25 x 1.5-5 mm, lowest roundish to obovate, in whorls of 4, cauline in whorls of 6-8, oblanceolate, oblong-elliptic to linear-oblong, with antrorsely scabrid margins. Cymes capitate, subtended by linear-lanceolate bracts 1/2-2/3 as long as ± sessile flowers. Corolla bright blue, 7-13 mm; tube widened in uppermost 1/4; lobes 1-3 mm, ± ovate, subobtuse. Stamens included; anthers linear-oblong to narrowly triangular, 1.25-1.4 mm; filaments 0.1-0.2 mm. Mericarps to 2.5 mm diam., finely granulate. Fl. 4-7. Steppe, Quercus scrub, bare ground, fields, 500-2000 m.
