Differs from C. imbricata in having stems to 30 cm; leaves variable in shape and size, to 40 x 8 mm; spikes to 15 cm, more lax ; bracts ± linked by a hyaline membrane, broadly lanceolate, tightly adpressed, base inflated by a very broad vein, with enlarged epidermal cells; calyx obsolescent; corolla 5-7.5 mm, somewhat exceeding bracts. Fl. 4-8. Clearings in sclerophyll and conifer forests, macchie and phrygana, rocky slopes, orchards, vineyards and fields, s.l.-1300 m.
