Annual, 20-80 cm, Stems prostrate to ascending, flaccid, often branched from base, quadrangular, loosely hairy with soft, ± long, minutely hooked, patent hairs, without retrorse setae. Leaves in whorls of 8-10, 10-35 x 1.55 mm, lowest spathulate to suborbicular-spathulate, apiculate, upper oblanceolate, oblanceolate-oblong to -linear, cuspidate, with hyaline apex, retrorsely aculeolate along the flat margins and the midrib, hairy on both surfaces. Inflorescence elongate-pyramidal, partial inflorescences ± dense-flowered, to 7 x longer than subtending leaves, hairy; ultimate branchings ebracteate. Pedicels 1-3 mm, divaricate, glabrous. Flowers andromonoecious. Corolla creamy to greenish-white, 24 mm diam., with lobes oblong to narrowly ovate, usually caudate-aristate, rarely only apiculate. Mericarps subglobose, 1.5-2 mm diam., minutely papillate. Fl. 4-6. Hedges, open woodland, shady scree, 300-1300 m.
