Robust perennial, with rootstock, usually lacking rooting stolons. Stems single to few, 25-70 cm, erect to ascending, quadrangular, ±branched from the often lignescent base, often hairy, mainly towards base with hairs to c. 0.4 mm to almost glabrous, often tinged with violet. Leaves in whorls of 6-8, 10-16 x 1.5-5 mm, oblanceolate-oblong, lowest sometimes obovate, to c. 6.5 mm broad, all shortly cuspidate to obtusish, rarely acuminate, with hyaline apex to 0.1-0.2 mm, antrorsely scabrid along the almost flat to slightly revolute margins, coriaceous, ± shining above, somewhat paler, duller and often hairy below, with rather prominent midrib. Inflorescence elongate-pyramidal to subcylindrical, dense-flowered with branches rather remote, usually spreading at an angle of C. 45° , rarely divaricate. Pedicels c. 0.5-3 mm, glabrous, finally ± spreading. Corolla whitish, yellowish to greenish , rotate, c. 2-3 mm diam., with lobes oblong, ± aristate. Anthers nigrescent. Mericarps broadly reniform, c. 1.5-1.7 mm, rugulose, glabrous. 2n = 22. Fl. 4-6. Dry scrub, slopes and cliffs, s.l.-1800 m.
