Stems 2.5-25 cm, branched at base; branches erect to spreading, quadrangular to subalate, ± hispid, particularly above; internodes usually much abbreviated, sometimes elongate to 1.5-2 cm. Leaves 2-10 x 1-3.5 mm, narrowly obovate to oblanceolate-spathulate, obtuse to subcuspidate, ± petiolate , lower often glabrous to ciliolate, upper ± hispidulous. Flowers whitish, yellowish or purplish, ± cup-shaped, central hermaphrodite, 1.5-2 mm, lateral male, 0.5-1.5 mm diam. Fruit covering 3-crested, usually densely spinulose-hispid , without dorsal horn. Mericarps usually 2, dark brown, c. 1-1.5 mm, papillose. Fl. 3-5. Dry rocky places, s.l.-1600 m.
