Small tree to 10-15 m, profusely suckering. Bark greyish. Young shoots yellowish-brown, glabrous. Leaves leathery, glabrous, glaucous-green on both surfaces, very variable in size and form; on young plants and on long shoots linear to elongate-ovate, to 12 x 0.5-4 cm, usually entire, on older trees and on short shoots ovate-rhombic, elliptic-orbicular or reniform, 2-5 x 3-7 cm or larger, shallowly dentate in upper part. Petiole to 3.5 cm. Female catkins lax, sometimes subtended by 1-2 smaller leaves. Flowers long-pedicelled. Capsule 10-12 mm, smooth, glabrous or slightly pubescent when young, 2-3-valved. Fl. 4. River banks and flooded places, sometimes on saline soils, s.l.-1650 m.

N. Africa, Jordan valley, C. Arabia, Syrian Desert, Caucasia, Iran, Afghanistan, C. Asia eastwards to Mongolia & N. China.
