Caespitose perennial with condensed woody stems bearing rosettes of leaves. Basal leaves obovate to oblong, obtuse to acuminate, glaucous, ciliate at base, finely serrate above, usually lime-encrusted. Flowering stems 8-30 cm, sparsely glandular-hairy, often red, bearing 5-50 flowers. Petals white, 3-7 mm, 2-3 x longer than sepals. Ovary semi-inferior. Fl. 4-8. Mountains, screes, rock crevices, 200-3400 m.
