Biennial, 50-150 cm, softly adpressed white floccose-tomentose, glabrescent. Stem terete or striate-angled, usually simple. Basal leaves glabrous or sparsely hairy above, floccose-tomentose beneath, obovate-oblong to oblong-Ianceolate, 10-40 x 3-12 cm, obtusely crenate, petiole indistinct or to 7 cm; cauline smaller, upper caudate, crenulate. Inflorescence dense, simple; flowers 4-7 in clusters contiguous or spaced below. Bracts 10-14 mm, ovate to linear-lanceolate, caudate-acuminate, bracteoles 2. Pedicels 2-15 mm. Calyx 7-12 mm, tomentose, interspersed with shortly stalked glands, lobes lanceolate, acute. Corolla yellow, 20-35 mm diam., without pellucid glands, pubescent outside. Stamens 5, 3 posterior filaments with whitish-yellow wool up to anthers, 2 anterior glabrous, anthers decurrent, 4-5 mm. Capsule broadly ovate, 7-10 x 5-7 mm, tomentose. 2n=30. Fl. 6-7. Forests, wet meadows, water channels, crop and fallow fields, 200-1950 m.
