Dwarf shrub 8-40 cm. Branches ascending or procumbent, often rooting at base; bark grey. Leaves at ends of branches, subsessile, coriaceous, oblanceolate, elliptic or obovate, 15-45 x 5-11 mm, obtuse or acute, glabrous. Flowers subsessile, 2-10, crowded in axils of upper leaves, fragrant. Peduncles 7-16 mm. Bracts elliptic or obovate, 6-10 mm, chartaceous. Perianth 14-18mm, pink or yellow flushed crimson, waxy-white within, glabrous or unevenly puberulous; lobes lanceolate-ovate, 3-5 mm, acute. Ovary glabrous. Fruit ovoid, red. Fl. 5-7. Subalpine and alpine meadows with Vaccinium myrtillus, edge of Pinus forests, 1400-2500 m.
