Stem robust, to 2 m. Leaf blades 4-8 mm broad. Female and male spikes separated by a distance of 1-6 cm. Female spike 13-37 cm, 1.3-2 cm diam. when ripe, dark cinnamon brown; scales filiform, equalling hairs, with an ovate-spathulate, dark brown apex. Stigma linear. Male spike subequal to female, 16-31 cm; scales filiform, some simple, others dilated and forked at apex. Anthers 2.2-3 mm. Pollen grains single. Fruit 1-1.2 mm, dehiscent; hairs 24-60, 5-9 mm, on a basal zone 0.5-2 mm. Fl. 6-10. Lakes, ditches, swamps, wet places, s.l.-1930 m.
