Annual or biennial herb, 4-50 cm with slender tap root. Basal leaves rosette-forming, lyrate to pinnatifid to entire, narrowed into a stalk. Upper leaves clasping the stem with acute auricles. Petals 2-2,5 x 0,5-1 mm, with an indistinct claw and blade. Fruiting pcdicels 5-12 mm, spreading-ascending. Fruit 7-9 x 2,5-6 mm; septum 5-7 x 1-1,5 mm; wings absent. Seeds many, up to 30, usually mucilaginous. Fl. 1-12. Cultivated land and waste places, s.l.-2000 m.
Cosmopolitan weed in temperate regions. Very variable in all characters.
